The 52 Week Experiment

weekly goals

Posted by scmfinance on January 17, 2007

i decided i would quickly create an excel function that would detail where i hope to be at by the beginning of each week — my weekly goals. as of right now, i am doing well however i am trying to get out of a losing play at the moment that will seriously hurt my total but still keep me ahead of my weekly goals by a couple of weeks. so far six weeks into the experiment my earnings are equivalent to about where i should be by week 12 (but that is before i have sold for what appears will be a substantial loss)

Hey congrats on the success of the experiment so far.

One thing, i was wondering a few formulas.

Im going to start an experiment like this but i wanted to know how you set up your excel sheet to show your gains in percentage?

thanks for the congrats! although now that people seem to be reading the blog avidly, i’m pretty nervous that it’s going to fail…but…i guess we’ll see…hopefully it will prove useful and inspiring no matter what — at least that’s what i’ll keep telling myself.

as far as your question regarding excel…let me just say first that spreadsheets are wonderful! as far as calculating percentages: if you set up a function that divides the profit/loss by the initial investment, it will return a number. from there, you can simply select the cell (or entire column), right-click, go to “format cells”, and under “category” select “percentage.”

the function would look something like: =(B1/A1), which simply means that you divide column 2 by column 1

    i hope that helps!

Thanks. The experiment is good and so far your doing fine. Dont get too jumpy on stocks, keep the same discipline. remember 10% is all you need for the week.

How do you have your spreadsheet set up? im like a perfectionist so it has to be perfect and im having problems..these are my headers

stock, shares, buy date, sell date, buy price, sell price, gain/loss, change

how do you put your starting amount and ending amount with the % change so far?

Sorry for all the questions, my email is available if you want to email me your outline, i dont mind.
